The bed of the Arno river, in its course through San Giovanni, is partly surrounded on both sides by a large public green area closed to traffic, called "golena" (a terrain between destined to contain flood water in case of overflow). The area is crossed by a pedestrian pathway connecting the two town extremities, within a park that covers the entire surface (91380 sqm). Works designed to rearrange the various areas in their present appearance started in the middle of the Eighties and continued for about ten years, producing a result appreciated by visitors of every age. The North-West zone is covered by a thick pine wood, existing since the beginning of the 20th century, which contains a snack bar, a stationary merry-go-round for children, and a "fitness itinerary" with gymnastic equipments for those who want to keep in exercise.

Farther South in the direction of Montevarchi, on the same side after the old bridge, the century old pines give way for lime-trees and acacias, where three playing areas for children, a skating place and in Summer an outdoor dancing place are available.
The East side shows less continuity due to the presence of the local bowling green, of another Summer piano bar at the level of the Ipazia bridge, and of the mouth of a small brook next to the bridge.
Additional playing grounds for children are available also along these banks, while in the North area, close to the Pertini bridge, there is a swimming pool with adjoining pizza restaurant and pub.
