The locality "Montecarlo", on the left Arno banks, was called Monte Ortale in the past.
At the beginning of the 15th century there was a small villa belonging to Marquis Carlo Ricasoli.
He donated it to the Franciscan friars of the nearby Monastery of Ganghereto, near Terranuova.
Since then the locality was named "Montecarlo" as a homage to the donor.
A very beautiful pathway in stone - called "Selce" ("flint") winds through the local wood.
Montecarlo can be reached by car from the downtown of San Giovanni Valdarno following the signs to Cavriglia.
We further underline that St. Francis' Monastery at Montecarlo is included in the Jubilaeum route "Crocevia della Fede" ("Crossroads of Faith"): Six Routes from Fiesole towards the Third Millennium", and precisely in "The Via Aretina".
